Methodology

• Officer cost: $2.17/min — based on ~$113k avg total compensation (salary + benefits + pension), NYC FY2024 Adopted Budget.
• NYPD vehicle: $0.83/min — based on ~$437M fleet budget / ~35,000 vehicle-hours daily.
• Detection: Uses TensorFlow.js COCO-SSD model running locally in your browser. Detected persons are analyzed for NYPD navy-blue uniform colors — officers and sergeants are counted; pedestrians are shown with a dashed gray box and excluded from the cost total. Cars, trucks, and buses are counted as NYPD vehicles.
